Ever wondered where the idea of birthstones comes from?
It may surprise you that the history of birthstones has its roots all the way back in the Bible.
Birthstones and their vivid colors have long been a way to connect your birth month with rare and unique gemstones.
The most detailed description can be found in the Book of Exodus, a text probably based on ancient oral tradition and written down in stages between 600 and 400 BC.
Described in Exodus is the Breastplate of Aaron, a sacred object worn by the High Priest of the Israelites in order to communicate with God. Worn over the Priest's sacred vestments, it was attached by shoulder straps at the corners and contained twelve gemstones.
The first academic research of the Breastplate was carried out by Roman scholar Titus Flavius Josephus (c.37-100 AD), who apart from having a fabulous name, studied the twelve gemstones of Aaron's Breastplate, and compiled the first list of Birthstones based on his findings.
This Jewish historian (Josephus) believed there was a connection between these twelve stones, the twelve months of the year and the twelve signs of the zodiac.
There is, unfortunately, no agreement on what the gems in the Breastplate were, but some studies suggest that they may have been-
- Peridot
- Emerald
- Garnet
- Quartz
- Amethyst
- Citrine
- Onyx
In the eighth to the ninth century, religious sects have appointed or assigned a particular stone to each Apostle based on a line from the Book of Revelations. Due to this reason, it became a tradition to wear one birthstone per month. But recently, the use of birthstones has strayed far from its tradition.
Nowadays, people mostly wear them for taste, fashion, and beauty.
The current birthstone list dates back to 1912 as a result of the National Association of Jewellers (America) trying to standardize the list.
